UPDATED Syria vote: Richard Drax only Dorset MP to vote against government
Richard Drax - the only MP with any guts around here...the rest would kill innocent women and children - for what???
10:43am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
Syria vote: Richard Drax only Dorset MP to vote against government
SOUTH Dorset MP Richard Drax was the only Dorset MP to vote against the government in the Syria vote.
Mr Drax was among 30 Conservative and nine Liberal Democrat MPs who voted against the motion proposed by Prime Minister David Cameron.
West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin voted with the government.
The others all voted with David Cameron. Annette Brooke abstained.
The motion proposed a ‘strong humanitarian response’ to the use of chemical weapons which if necessary could require military action which was ‘legal, proportionate and focused’ on saving lives by ‘preventing and deterring further use of Syria’s chemical weapons.’ Speaking after the motion had been defeated Mr Cameron said: “The British Parliament, reflecting the views of the British people, does not want to see British military action. I get that, and the Government will act accordingly.”
Mr Drax said he believed it was not in the UK’s national interest to get involved in Syria.
He said he believed that dropping missiles would only inflame and exacerbate.
He said: “I don’t see what firing missiles into Syria would do.”
He added: “Bombs don’t solve problems. Boots on the ground is possibly the only realistic solution to relieve a situation like Syria. But that isn’t going to happen.”
Mr Drax added that the UN had not finished their current investigation.
He said he supported humanitarian support and aid.
Mr Letwin said that the world would be a less safe place to live if the use of chemical weapons went unchallenged, but he said he recognised the will of Parliament.
He said: “Personally, I believe that it would have been right for Britain to participate in this limited intervention.
“Contrary to the impression given in some quarters, we remain one of the very few countries with a military capacity to engage in an intervention of this kind and, if the large-scale use of chemical weapons goes unchallenged, our world will ultimately be a less safe and a less decent place in which to live.”
He added: “But I recognise that the will of Parliament – undoubtedly coincident in this case with the current majority view of the British public - must prevail.
“Clearly, given Parliament’s decision on this matter, we will not now be able to take any active part even in a highly-targeted, carefully judged and brief intervention to deter the further use of chemical weapons."

Exclusive: CIA Files Prove America Helped Saddam as He Gassed Iran
The U.S. knew Hussein was launching some of the worst chemical attacks in history -- and still gave him a hand.
BY SHANE HARRIS AND MATTHEW M. AID | AUGUST 26, 2013
The U.S. government may be considering military action in response to chemical strikes near Damascus. But a generation ago, America's military and intelligence communities knew about and did nothing to stop a series of nerve gas attacks far more devastating than anything Syria has seen, Foreign Policy has learned.
In 1988, during the waning days of Iraq's war with Iran, the United States learned through satellite imagery that Iran was about to gain a major strategic advantage by exploiting a hole in Iraqi defenses. U.S. intelligence officials conveyed the location of the Iranian troops to Iraq, fully aware that Hussein's military would attack with chemical weapons, including sarin, a lethal nerve agent.
The intelligence included imagery and maps about Iranian troop movements, as well as the locations of Iranian logistics facilities and details about Iranian air defenses. The Iraqis used mustard gas and sarin prior to four major offensives in early 1988 that relied on U.S. satellite imagery, maps, and other intelligence. These attacks helped to tilt the war in Iraq's favor and bring Iran to the negotiating table, and they ensured that the Reagan administration's long-standing policy of securing an Iraqi victory would succeed. But they were also the last in a series of chemical strikes stretching back several years that the Reagan administration knew about and didn't disclose.
U.S. officials have long denied acquiescing to Iraqi chemical attacks, insisting that Hussein's government never announced he was going to use the weapons. But retired Air Force Col. Rick Francona, who was a military attaché in Baghdad during the 1988 strikes, paints a different picture.

Charged: 83-year-old Rolf Harris is the biggest name to face trial as a result of Scotland Yard's Operation Yewtree
Rolf Harris maintained his nine-month long silence over sex allegations yesterday as he was charged with indecently assaulting two under-age girls in the 1980s.
The 83-year-old entertainer did not comment publicly after Operation Yewtree detectives also charged him with downloading four indecent images of children last year.
The married father-of-one is the highest profile celebrity to be charged as a result of the Yewtree probe, which was set up in the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
But he has not issued a formal statement on the allegations since he was first quizzed by police last November.
There was no sign of Harris – a favourite of the Queen – at his riverside home in Berkshire yesterday and no mention of the developments on his website. His lawyer and publicist did not return messages requesting a statement.
Harris is charged with six counts of indecently assaulting a girl aged between 15 and 16, from 1980 to 1981. Each offence carries a maximum two-year sentence.
He is further charged with three offences of indecently assaulting a girl aged 14, in 1986. As a result of a law change, which increased the punishment for offences committed after 1985, the maximum jail term is ten years.
The TV presenter and acclaimed artist is also charged with four offences of making indecent images of a child between March and July 2012. The offence carries a maximum ten-year sentence.
After spending nine months investigating the allegations against Harris, including making well-documented background inquiries in Australia, Scotland Yard passed a file on the case to the Crown Prosecution Service on August 12.
Media interest: Press outside the home of Rolf Harris in Bray, Berkshire, today, after the CPS announced the charges against him
Alison Saunders, chief prosecutor for CPS London, said: ‘Having completed our review [of the evidence], we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Harris to be charged with nine counts of indecent assault and four of making indecent images of a child.’ Harris will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 23.
In public: Harris was interviewed under caution on November 29 last year after his house was searched, and has been rarely seen since - shown here in January
The entertainer was interviewed under caution by detectives on November 29 last year, five days after a search warrant was executed at his home in Bray near Maidenhead. He was formally arrested over the allegations on March 28 but although he was widely named on Twitter as being a Yewtree suspect, he was not identified by the mainstream media until April.
Yewtree has been run in three strands – claims involving Savile, those involving Savile and others, and those involving others. Harris is being dealt with under the ‘others’ strand, meaning the allegations have no link to Savile.
The Australian, who painted a portrait of the Queen in 2005 and performed at her Diamond Jubilee concert last year, has been a family favourite for decades. He had his first musical hit Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport in 1960, and continued to enjoy success in the industry, gaining cult status in recent years and performing at Glastonbury festival several times.
He also proved popular as a television presenter, getting his first big break in 1967 when he began hosting his own BBC1 programme, The Rolf Harris Show, before moving on to children’s television in the 1980s and then to Animal Hospital, which he hosted from 1994 to 2004.
At work: Rolf Harris, 83, was pictured performing earlier this month at the Wickham Festival in Hampshire
Honour: Rolf Harris painted the Queen to celebrate her 80th birthday in 2006, and is known to be well-liked by Her Majesty
Harris, who has lived in Bray for more than 50 years, was awarded an MBE in 1968, an OBE in 1977 and a CBE in 2006, and was made Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list last year.
At last summer’s Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace, Harris famously led the crowd in an impromptu rendition of Two Little Boys, his 1969 Christmas No 1 hit.
Harris’s wife is the Welsh sculptress and jeweller Alwen Hughes.
They met while they were both art students, marrying in 1958. They have one daughter, Bindi, a painter, now aged 49.
His friends were in shock after he was charged yesterday. Veteran singer Vince Hill, who has known the Australian celebrity for more than 50 years, said: ‘I can’t find words to describe my shock and disbelief. This just isn’t the Rolf I know.’
Hill, 82, admitted his biggest worry was for the star’s ailing wife Alwen. ‘She’s crippled with arthritis, suffers problems with her hips and knees and is in her 80s,’ he said.

General Wesley Clark: Wars Were Planned - Seven Countries In Five Years

Wesley Clark, September 30th, 2006
"General Wesley Clark:
Because I had been through the Pentagon right after 9/11. About ten days after 9/11, I went through the Pentagon and I saw Secretary Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz. I went downstairs just to say hello to some of the people on the Joint Staff who used to work for me, and one of the generals called me in. He said,
"Sir, you've got to come in and talk to me a second." I said, "Well, you're too busy." He said, "No, no." He says,
"We've made the decision we're going to war with Iraq." This was on or about the 20th of September. I said, "We're going to war with Iraq? Why?" He said, "I don't know." He said, "I guess they don't know what else to do." So I said,
"Well, did they find some information connecting Saddam to al-Qaeda?" He said, "No, no." He says, "There's nothing new that way. They just made the decision to go to war with Iraq." He said, "I guess it's like we don't know what to do about terrorists, but we've got a good military and we can take down governments." And he said,
"I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem has to look like a nail."
So I came back to see him a few weeks later, and by that time we were bombing in Afghanistan. I said, "Are we still going to war with Iraq?" And he said, "Oh, it's worse than that." He reached over on his desk. He picked up a piece of paper. And he said, "I just got this down from upstairs" -- meaning the Secretary of Defense's office -- "today." And he said,
"This is a memo that describes how we're going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran." I said, "Is it classified?" He said, "Yes, sir." I said, "Well, don't show it to me." And I saw him a year or so ago, and I said, "You remember that?" He said, "Sir, I didn't show you that memo! I didn't show it to you!"

Onslaught to begin when UN inspectors leave
Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
August 29, 2013
A reporter with Israel’s most widely read newspaper has been told by defense establishment officials that a US-led attack on Syria will begin on Saturday and end when Barack Obama meets Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
Despite an apparent softening in rhetoric as British Prime Minister David Cameron faces a parliamentary revolt over military intervention, in addition to reports that the intelligence against Assad’s regime is by no means a “slam dunk,” Israel Hayom reporter Amir Mizroch tweets that the attack will begin on Saturday immediately after UN inspectors have left the country.
Inspectors had initially planned to leave on Sunday after concluding their investigation but their departure a day early has increased speculation that air strikes are imminent.
British and American military might is now fully in place and prepared for strikes which experts say will take the form of Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles fired from warships or submarines.
Mizroch also highlights remarks made by former Mossad director Danny Yatom, who says that the apparent delay on green lighting military strikes is only so Bashar Al-Assad can’t use the UN inspectors as human shields.
Mizroch was also told that Israel sent Assad a message via Russia threatening that if Syria attempts to attack Israel, Damascus will be targeted and Assad’s regime will be toppled.
This threat was made despite attempts by Gulf nations to secure a promise from Israel that it would act with restraint if Syria attempts retaliatory strikes against Israel in response to a western onslaught. Israel replied that it would act with restraint, but only if aggression against it “did not exceed reasonable bounds.”
In a related story, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro has promised a “strong and serious response,” to Assad’s alleged chemical atrocity last week, despite American officials admitting to the New York Times that there is no “smoking gun” that directly links President Assad to the attack.
US intelligence officials also told the Associated Press that the intelligence proving Assad’s culpability is “no slam dunk,” a far cry form the Obama administration’s rhetoric, which held that Assad’s responsibility was “undeniable.”
