Ramsey Orta, Activist Who Filmed Eric Garner’s Death, Needs Your Help

ramseyBy Derrick Broze

WeCopWatch activist Ramsey Orta is expected to turn himself in to prison in early October for charges he says were trumped-up following his filming of the death of Eric Garner.

The man who filmed the infamous video of Eric Garner’s death at the hands of the New York Police Department will soon become the only person who was present at Garner’s death to face prison time. Ramsey Orta is heading to prison for four years based on charges he says are a direct retaliation for filming Garner’s death.
“The man who filmed the police killing of Eric Garner, Ramsey Orta, is now heading to jail for four years on unrelated charges—making him the only person at the scene of Garner’s killing who will serve jail time,” TIME reported last summer.

“Last week Orta took a plea deal on weapons and drug charges. He says he has been repeatedly arrested and harassed by cops since he filmed the fatal police chokehold nearly two years ago.”

Ramsey told TIME he was living on State Island at the time of the death and  knew Eric Garner. After filming the death by chokehold and releasing it to the media, Ramsey began reporting harassment and intimidation from the police. According to TIME, Orta was arrested three times since August 2014. He says he was the victim of an attempted poisoning while he was behind bars.
The first, for criminal possession of a handgun he allegedly tried to give a 17-year-old, came a day after Garner’s death was ruled a homicide by the city’s medical examiner. In February, he was arrested again on multiple charges of selling and possessing drugs. The third came on June 30 when he was accused of selling MDMA to an undercover cop. A lab test later showed that the alleged MDMA was fake and the charges were reduced. All told, Orta is facing more than 60 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

The media and law enforcement have attempted to make an example out of Ramsey, attempting to paint him as a criminal for law infractions that took place in his past. Orta was found guilty of attempted sale of a controlled substance in 2011 and criminal possession of stolen property in 2012. Ramsey now prepares to turn himself into prison in October and WeCopWatch, the activist group that recruited Ramsey, says he is going to need ongoing support.

“When we pulled Ramsey into WeCopwatch a year ago we began to see first hand the type of treatment Ramsey had been experiencing,” reads a forthcoming statement from Kevin Moore, David Whitt and Jacob Crawford of WeCopwatch. “Covert and overt surveillance, as well as coordinated online attacks which were carried out to discredit Ramsey, separate him from his support network, and put his life in danger, specifically once he was behind bars.”

WeCopWatch says Ramsey “was targeted because of his courage” and insists he is not guilty. The group says Ramsey was set up on a weapons charge despite not being in possession of a gun.

“He was arrested, his charges were stacked, and his charges were all folded into one case putting him in a situation where was he was facing decades of prison time,” the group writes. WeCopWatch says they have also been the victims of infiltration attempts and surveillance.

Despite his upcoming imprisonment, Ramsey Orta remains optimistic and defiant. Orta says that his story would have been forgotten had it not been for the support of activists and family members.

“I’m glad to see people coming around on these bad terms to learn and understand what we as Black and Brown people are fighting,” Orta told Activist Post. “Never forget we are one, we are all Brothers and Sisters, and most of all we want peace. We want an end to Police Brutality, and the start of holding police accountable. We the people want to feel safe and not worry if our kid is next. All we want is justice.”

WeCopwatch has launched a new Facebook page that will provide updates on Ramsey Orta’s situation and information on how supporters can help him directly. The group will post Orta’s mailing address once he is housed in prison. Until then you can donate to his PayPal Ortaramsey@gmail.com and get regular updates of how he is and what he needs at the Support Ramsey Orta Facebook page.

Sir Cliff Richard: "KITTY" GETS AWAY WITH IT? "sex abuse inquiry: No charges for singer" + ARCHIVE + "ELM GUEST HOUSE PAEDO PARTY LIST" + MORE - 18/06/16

Singer Sir Cliff Richard will face no further action over allegations of historical sex abuse, prosecutors say.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it had decided there was "insufficient evidence to prosecute".
Sir Cliff said he was "obviously thrilled that the vile accusations and the resulting investigation have finally been brought to a close".
But he said his naming by the media, despite not being charged, meant he had been "hung out like live bait".
Four men claimed offences took place between 1958 and 1983, the CPS said.
It is understood that one of the complainants intends to use the Victims' Right to Review Scheme to appeal against the decision not to bring charges.

'Spurious claims'

In a statement, Sir Cliff said: "I have always maintained my innocence, co-operated fully with the investigation, and cannot understand why it has taken so long to get to this point."
He criticised the "high-profile fumbling of my case from day one".
"Other than in exceptional cases, people who are facing allegations should never be named publicly until charged," he said.
"I was named before I was even interviewed and for me that was like being hung out like 'live bait'.
"It is obvious that such strategies simply increase the risk of attracting spurious claims which not only tie up police resources and waste public funds, but they forever tarnish the reputations of innocent people."

Sir Cliff Richard's anger, mixed with relief, seeps from every line of his 366-word statement. The phrase "hung out like live bait" stands out - and it's designed to.
Sir Cliff wants to stop the reputations of other people being tarnished by publicity about allegations that haven't crossed the threshold for a prosecution, let alone been proven.
Although it's not police practice to identify suspects who haven't been charged - unless there are exceptional circumstances - names occasionally leak out and journalists sometimes discover the details through other routes.
A statutory ban on naming would put a stop to that. But would it allow sex offenders to get away with their crimes?
The concern is that if they hadn't been named in the media at an early stage, thereby emboldening other victims to come forward, some recently convicted celebrities would have got away with it.

Last year an independent investigation concluded that South Yorkshire Police should not have released "highly confidential" information to the BBC about a planned search of Sir Cliff Richard's home.
BBC film crews, including one in a helicopter, filmed the raid in August 2014.
In a statement, South Yorkshire Police apologised "wholeheartedly for the additional anxiety caused" to Sir Cliff by the force's "initial handling of the media interest" in its investigation.
The investigation is estimated to have cost "in the region of £800,000" including staffing costs, the force added.
"Non-recent allegations are, by their very nature, complex and difficult matters to investigate and can take a considerable amount of time," it said.
"We appreciate that waiting for a conclusion will undoubtedly have caused additional distress. However, it is in the interests of justice to investigate such matters thoroughly."

'Serious questions'

Prosecutors received the full evidence file from police on 10 May, and BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said that meant the CPS had made its decision "quite quickly".
But he said the CPS had been working alongside the police for many months and there would now be "serious questions for the police about why this has taken so long".
He also said there would be "serious questions for the BBC in terms of its coverage".
Commenting on the claims against Sir Cliff, our correspondent said this "isn't necessarily the end of the matter", as the CPS maintains it must "keep every case under review" and every complainant has the right to a review of a decision not to bring charges - as one has said he will.
Responding to questions about the BBC's coverage, a BBC spokesman said: "We applied normal editorial judgements to a story that was covered widely by all media and have continued to report the investigation as it developed including the CPS's decision today - which is running prominently across our news output."

Conservative MP David Davis said Sir Cliff's case was "another high-profile arrest which resulted in no prosecution".
"It is time for a complete review of police procedures surrounding high-profile sex abuse cases, and the publicity surrounding these cases," he said.
"Whilst it is important to protect victims and maximise the chances of a successful prosecution, this must not result in the gratuitous destruction of people's reputation."
Broadcaster and campaigner Nick Ross agreed with Sir Cliff's comment that he was "hung out like live bait".
He said police faced an "impossible dilemma" trying to balance justice for victims with "trying not to have a witch hunt against people, some of whom are celebrities".
But he said police did not handle Sir Cliff's case correctly, both in terms of Sir Cliff's name being released and by taking "so long" over the investigation.
Comedian Jimmy Tarbuck said he had not expected the CPS to come to any other decision when it came to his friend.
Tarbuck was released without charge in 2014 after his arrest over allegations of historical child sex abuse.
He said: "I have known this man since we were 19 years of age, that's a long time, and I knew him then as a nice fellow.
"I can tell you so many things about him, he's a decent human being. And why keep him waiting all this long?"

Cliff Richard: Crown Prosecution Service receives 'full file of evidence' in child sex abuse investigation
Prosecutors will now review if there is 'sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction' in the veteran entertainer's case

Detectives investigating sex abuse claims against Sir Cliff Richard have sent a "full file" of evidence to prosecutors after coming under pressure to wind up the two year probe.
South Yorkshire Police - which first carried out a raid on the singer's home in August 2014 - confirmed officers are now awaiting a charging decision from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Earlier this year, Antony Stansfield, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, said the length of time Sir Cliff has been left in the dark over abuse claims was "unacceptable".

A CPS spokewoman said: “We have received a full file of evidence from South Yorkshire Police. We will now carefully consider its contents in line with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, in order to establish whether there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction, and whether it is in the public interest to do so.”

Sir Cliff, 75, has been voluntarily interviewed twice by police.

The BBC beamed live images of the raid on his £3million Berkshire home while he was on holiday in Portugal.
Later that month, Sir Cliff flew back to the UK voluntarily to be questioned by detectives.

Sir Cliff was first interviewed after a man came forward claiming to have been groped by him at a Christian rally in 1985 when he was a boy.

South Yorkshire Police said: "Investigation files relating to allegations of non-recent sexual abuse involving a 75-year-old man, have been handed over to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

"The CPS will now consider the matter and South Yorkshire Police awaits their decision."
A spokesman for Sir Cliff said: "It would be inappropriate to comment while the matter is under review."
