'Day of Rage' planned in protest at Queen's Speech

A number of protests including a "Day of Rage" demonstration are to be held to coincide with the Queen's Speech.

Organised by Movement for Justice By Any Means Necessary (MFJ), the Day of Rage will see protesters march to Downing Street at 1pm on Wednesday and "bring down the Government".
The demonstrations are to take place on the day Prime Minister Theresa May sets out her legislative programme for the next two years in a Queen's Speech expected to be dominated by Brexit.
Attendees have been urged to keep their activities peaceful, amid concerns that the disaster may be hijacked for violent means.

The Clement James Centre, which has been helping Grenfell residents, said: "There has been a 'Day of Rage' announced for Wednesday, trying to bring London to a standstill.

"We cannot emphasise enough how against this many of the affected residents we've spoken to are and they do not want their grief hijacked for any violent or destructive means."
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said: "To everyone planning on demonstrating against Theresa May's Government over the next few weeks, it is vital that these protests are peaceful."
One the The Day of Rage march Facebook page it references the Grenfell Tower fire and "brutal austerity, cuts and anti-immigrant attacks".

The MFJ event page states: "Politicians and many community and religious leaders will be looking to divert our rage and fury into inquiries, investigations, reports, court hearings, and parliamentary processes.

"We will not accept those brush-offs and diversions, we will not settle for less than the destruction of May's coalition of austerity and bigotry - we must bring down this government."
Organisers are seeking the permanent right to remain in the UK for all Grenfell Tower residents, and for survivors to take over unoccupied flats in Kensington and Chelsea.
Stand Up To Racism have also organised a demonstration for 6pm called: "Protest the Queen's speech - no to May/DUP racism & bigotry!"

London Socialist Party is hosting a Facebook event called "May Must Go! Protest the Queen's Speech" which is scheduled for 4pm.

Hundreds have indicated online that they will be attending the protests.

Thousands of protesters to descend on Westminster in 'Day of Rage' over Queen's Speech

Labour's John McDonnell urged activists from the Movement for Justice By Any Means Necessary to be "peaceful" in their bid to "shut down London

Thousands of protesters are set to descend on Westminster tomorrow on a 'Day of Rage' to mark the Queen’s Speech.

Demonstrators from the Movement for Justice By Any Means Necessary hope to “shut down London” on the day the monarch opens Parliament.
Boosted by the Tories’ general election disaster, campaigners say in a Facebook post: “We’ve felt our power.
“We’ve tasted victory.
“Now we must escalate our actions to take down this rotten government, which has lost all authority to govern.
Theresa May won't like this one bit
“Let’s make June 21, the day of the Queen’s Speech A DAY OF RAGE, a day we shut down London, a declaration that there will be no peace until this government is brought down.”
There is likely to be extra security in and around Westminster, with the hot weather expected to swell turnout for the protest.

Organisers urged activists to “walk out of school, take the day off, call in sick, strike” so they could join the protest.
The demonstration aims to highlight a wide range of causes: campaigners want to end university tuition fees and bring back education maintenance allowance, to “stop the scapegoating of immigrants and defend freedom of movement” and “reverse the cuts and attacks on our public services”.

John McDonnell urged the protesters to be 'peaceful'
It wants to “unite the struggles against racism and against poverty”.
Shadow Chancellor John McDOnnell wrote on Twitter: “To everyone planning on demonstrating against Theresa May’s government over the next few weeks, it is vital that these protests are peaceful”.

And in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze, which killed at least 79 people last week in Kensington, demonstrators call for “quality, safe and affordable homes for all”.
