- ABSOLUTELY, DEFINITELY, NOT COLD FUSION DEPARTMENT -

Scientists Get Serious About Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions
By Michael Koziol
It’s been a big year for low-energy nuclear reactions. LENRs, as they’re known, are a fringe research topic that some physicists think could explain the results of an infamous experiment nearly 30 years ago that formed the basis for the idea of cold fusion. That idea didn’t hold up, and only a handful of researchers around the world have continued trying to understand the mysterious nature of the inconsistent, heat-generating reactions that had spurred those claims.

Their determination may finally pay off, as researchers in Japan have recently managed to generate heat more consistently from these reactions, and the U.S. Navy is now paying close attention to the field.

In June, scientists at several Japanese research institutes published a paper in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy in which they recorded excess heat after exposing metal nanoparticles to hydrogen gas. The results are the strongest in a long line of LENR studies from Japanese institutions like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Michel Armand, a physical chemist at CIC Energigune, an energy research center in Spain, says those results are difficult to dispute. In the past, Armand participated in a panel of scientists that could not explain measurements of slight excess heat in a palladium and heavy-water electrolysis experiment—measurements that could potentially be explained by LENRs.

In September, Proceedings magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute published an article about LENRs titled, “This Is Not ‘Cold Fusion,’ ” which had won second place in Proceedings’ emerging technology essay contest.

So what exactly is going on? It starts with electrochemists Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons’s infamous 1989 cold fusion announcement. They claimed they had witnessed excess heat in a room-temperature tabletop setup. Physicists around the world scrambled to reproduce their results.

Most couldn’t, accused the pair of fraud, and dismissed the concept of cold fusion. Of the small number who could reproduce the results, a few, including Lewis Larsen, looked for alternate explanations. Larsen is one of the authors of the Widom-Larsen theory, which is one attempt to explain those results through LENRs and was first published in 2006.

That theory suggests that the heat in these experiments is not generated by hydrogen atoms fusing together, as cold fusion advocates believe, but instead by protons and electrons merging to create neutrons.

Here’s what’s going on, according to the theory. You start with a metal (palladium, for example) immersed in water. Electrolysis splits the water molecules, and the metal absorbs the hydrogen like a sponge. When the metal is saturated, the hydrogen’s protons collect in little “islands” on top of the “film” of electrons on the metal’s surface.

Next comes the tricky bit. The protons will quantum mechanically entangle—you can think of them as forming one “heavy” proton. The surface electrons will similarly behave as a “heavy” electron. Injecting energy—a laser or an ion beam will do—gives the heavy proton and heavy electron enough of a boost to force a tiny number of the entangled electrons and protons to merge into neutrons.

Those neutrons are then captured by nearby atoms in the metal, giving off gamma rays in the process. The heavy electron captures those gamma rays and reradiates them as infrared—that is, heat. This reaction obliterates the site where it took place, forming a tiny crater in the metal.

The Widom-Larsen theory is not the only explanation for LENRs, but it was reviewed favorably by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency in 2010. Two independent scientists concluded that it is built upon “well-established theory” and “explains the observations from a large body of LENR experiments without invoking new physics or ad hoc mechanisms.” However, the scientists also cautioned that the theory had done little to unify bickering LENR researchers and cold fusion advocates.

The theory also hints at why results have been so inconsistent—creating enough active sites to produce meaningful amounts of heat requires nanoscale control over a metal’s shape. Nano material research has progressed to that point only in recent years.

Larsen is confident in his theory and the promise of LENRs. Now, after strong results from researchers and more attention from institutions like the U.S. Navy, that theory may finally begin to prove out in experimental data—the first critical step in what would still be a very long road toward practical use.

This article appears in the December 2018 print issue as “Scientists Reconsider Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions.”

Scientist Admits Aliens May Have Already Visited Earth
A NASA scientist admits that it's entirely possible aliens have already visited Earth – and we simply never noticed.

The space expert also noted that not all UFO sightings can be "explained or denied", and said scientists should be more open-minded about the possibility of alien visitors.

Nasa has long been investing in SETI, the "search for extraterrestrial intelligence" – better known as aliens.

And in a recently publisher paper on SETI, Professor Silvano P. Colombano suggested that alien life may have already visited us.

He suggested that aliens could look so different from how we expect, and that they may be able to travel huge distances – because we simply can't comprehend their make-up or technology.

"I simply want to point out the fact that the intelligence we might find and that might choose to find us (if it hasn’t already) might not be at all be produced by carbon based organisms like us," said Professor Colombano, of Nasa's Ames Research Centre in California.

"How might that change the above assumptions about interstellar travel? Our typical life-spans would no longer be a limitation (although even these could be dealt with multi-generational missions or suspended animation), and the size of the 'explorer' might be that of an extremely tiny super-intelligent entity."

According to Professor Colombano, scientists are too preoccupied with modern human technology.

This, he says, makes it difficult for us to imagine technology that could have been produced by aliens living on planets older than Earth.

He said "we need to re-visit even our most cherished assumptions", including that "interstellar travel is impossible or highly unlikely".

"Considering further that technological development in our civilisation started only about 10,000 years ago and has seen the rise of scientific methodologies only in the past 500 years, we can surmise that we might have a real problem in predicting technological evolution even for the next thousand years, let alone 6million times that amount," the professor explained.

He added: "Even if the speed of light continues to be an unbreakable barrier, over spans of thousands of years civilisations could probably make interstellar journeys."

In his paper, titled New Assumptions to Guide SETI Research, Professor Colombano said that recent discoveries of Earth-like planets by the Kepler space telescope offered hope.

He said this should prompt Nasa to "focus our attention on detecting signs of life and technology in specific planetary systems".

"I feel we need to become more flexible in our assumptions," he explained.

"The reason is that, while it is still reasonable and conservative to assume that life is most likely to have originated in conditions similar to ours, the vast time differences in potential evolutions render the likelihood of 'matching' technologies very slim."

Professor Colombano is advocating a more "aggressive approach" to the search for alien life.

He also said scientists shouldn't rule out possible "signals" of alien life, thanks to their own doubtful prejudices.

"In the very large amount of 'noise' in UFO reporting there may be 'signals' however small, that indicate some phenomena that cannot be explained or denied," the professor wrote.

"If we adopt a new set of assumptions about what forms of higher intelligence and technology we might find, some of those phenomena might fit specific hypotheses, and we could start some serious enquiry."

A Radio Search for Artificial Emissions from 'Oumuamua'

MOUNTAIN VIEW – It’s the first time a visitor from another star system has been seen nearby. But what is it? An asteroid, a comet … or an alien artifact?

Scientists at the SETI Institute have attempted to address this question by using the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) to observe ‘Oumuamua when it was about 170 million miles away, or slightly less than the diameter of Earth’s orbit. The intention was to measure artificial radio transmissions which, if found, would be strong evidence that this object is not simply a rock tossed into space by a random gravitational slingshot interaction that occurred in its home star system.

“We were looking for a signal that would prove that this object incorporates some technology – that it was of artificial origin,” says Gerry Harp, lead author of a paper to be published in the February 2019 issue of Acta Astronautica. “We didn’t find any such emissions, despite a quite sensitive search. While our observations don’t conclusively rule out a non-natural origin for ‘Oumuamua, they constitute important data in assessing its likely makeup.”

Following its discovery in October 2017, ‘Oumuamua was the subject of popular speculation about a possible non-natural origin largely because it brought to mind the interstellar spaceship in Arthur C. Clarke’s novel Rendezvous with Rama. Its highly elongated shape and the fact that no coma was observed strengthened this hypothesis for some, as these are uncharacteristic of asteroids and comets.

A recent paper published in Astrophysical Journal Letters by researchers at Harvard has also suggested the possibility that ‘Oumuamua is a deliberate construction. The Harvard researchers argue that the slight, unexpected acceleration observed for this object could be caused by pressure from sunlight as ‘Oumumua swung around the Sun. Their hypothesis is that the object might be a light sail, either deliberately or accidentally sent our way. A deliberate origin is considered somewhat more likely because our solar system is a very small target for any object that is not being aimed.

Such arguments strengthen the importance of observations such as those conducted on the ATA that can constrain the true nature of ‘Oumuamua.

Observations were made between November 23 and December 5, 2017, using the wide-band correlator of the ATA at frequencies between 1 and 10 GHz and with a frequency resolution of 100 kHz. No signals were found at a level that would be produced by an omnidirectional transmitter on-board the object of a power of about 10 watts or more. In portions of the radio spectrum that are routinely cluttered by artificial satellite telemetry, the threshold for detection was higher. In all cases, these limits to the powers that could be detected are quite modest – comparable to that of a citizen band radio.

While no signals were found coming from ‘Oumuamua, the types of observations reported by SETI Institute scientists may have utility in constraining the nature of any interstellar objects detected in the future, or even the small, well-known objects in our own Solar System. It has been long-hypothesized that some of the latter could be interstellar probes, and radio observations offer a way to address this imaginative, but by no means impossible, idea.

-STRANGE TALES FROM IRELAND DEPARTMENT -

Changelings, Fairies and Hat-Man

I come from a small village in Ireland. When I was growing up the population was somewhere around the 900 mark, and it's over 1600 now, been growing at a steady increase over the last few years. In the early 90's when I was a kid, pretty much every adult had some sort of 'ghost story.' I'm not even kidding, the amount of stuff I was told was ridiculous, sometimes laughable but quite often terrifying. Personally, I've had a number of experiences. I know it sounds convenient but they had a profound effect on my life and still shake me now when I think about them, they're for another time though. The main reason for writing to you guys now is to talk about two topics you brought up on previous shows. The Hat-Man and Changelings.

Just outside my village there is an old road called the Stump Lane, on the stump lane there's the ruins of an old house. It's beaten down to about two layers of the stone walls now and beside it is a tree known to the people of that area as the fairy tree. Further down the lane lives a woman who when she was a child, used to live in that old house by the fairy tree. It's said that her family were forced out of the house by the fairies. You see, the fairy folk were supposed to be pissed at her father Mr Bolger, for building a house by their tree. Apparently, (not saying I believe this part but a Hell of a lot of people do) there were several attempts made to chop the tree down but people were quickly put off by the red blood like substance that would stream from the cuts made by saws or axes (more than likely sap though, right?).

Down along the middle of the lane, there is a row of about 10 houses that are spaced out over about a kilometer, and 2 fields back behind these is a place simply known as the Fairy Fort. Further down the lane then, there is a separate lane that ventures off to an old farm that is owned by the Dunbar family I believe. A story I heard about them that dates back to the 30's is an odd one. I cannot give you names but one of the children, a young teenager at the time, was out picking blackberries one day for his mother but didn't return home. It got late and the mother got very worried. They were a country family in rural Ireland in the 30's, the children were never out late. She sent her husband and other sons out looking for him, but there was no sign of him. 3 weeks went by and they feared the worst, but he did eventually come home, though he was not the same. He came home nursing a sore arm, in fact one of his hands was deformed, it had been changed into a baby's hand. He said he was taken by the fairies, and this was not questioned, it was believed as absolute truth. The mother and father apparently tried a number of different things to please the fairies in the hope that they would make their son whole again, but the son died sometime in the 80's if I am remembering what I was told correctly and with one of his hands small and deformed. I just threw in those few because I know you guys love stories about the little people and I wanted to give you a feel for the area I grew up. So, the Changeling.

I'm not sure of the date on this one but it is said to have happened around the outskirts of the village. The woman who told me about the story of the Dunbars, shared this one with me too. She told me a sh*tload of things and really enjoyed sharing stories about the fairies and was a complete believer in them.

This is the story of a young woman who was widowed not long after she had given birth. Now fending for herself and a baby, she took on a job picking cabbages. Whilst working one day, her baby was sleeping in a basket along one of the drills. Everything was nice and quiet, till she got home. Her baby was different looking, old looking, the same size, but it looked like and old man. She couldn't leave its side, it would scream and shout for her, and not only that, it would curse and say foul things, laughing as it did. Her family came to visit and were disturbed by the baby. It threw bread at them, and spat at them, sniggering and jeering them as it did.

When they were leaving, the young lady's father brought her outside, the baby screamed like a banshee. The father told her that the thing inside was not her child and that he was going to send the priest out to her. Sure enough the priest called out to her and he received the same abuse. He told her to leave the thing outside for three days and no matter how hard to tried to get in, she was to leave it out there, ignore it, for it was not her child anymore, it was one of the fairies.

She didn't want to go through with it, but after suffering for weeks, she left the thing outside. It cried like a baby, sobbing and screaming and pleading...'mammy, please let me in mammy, don't leave me out here. I'm scared'. For three days and nights she listened to it bang on the windows, scream for her and weep in ways no person wants to her. But it all stopped, after the third night, there was silence. She opened the door to find her baby boy had been returned unharmed, safe and grinning.

So, onto the Hat-Man. I was really surprised that you guys have talked about the Hat-Man, mainly because I thought this guy was only based in my county, Wexford. I never imagined that it what such a common occurrence across the world.

When I was around 8 years old, I had a pal who was over at my house when he told me something that his father had told him and the rest of the family when they were eating dinner the night before. His father was working as a farmhand, and on this day was sheering sheep. He said he got a feeling someone was watching him. He looked around and saw nothing out of the ordinary and continued working. He would again feel a presence around him though and this time when he turned he saw a huge man, a man wearing a top hat and what looked like a cloak. He could not make out any features though, he just said that the man was black, he was just all black. My mother was there when my friend was retelling his father's story and she would follow it with a story of her own. Well, it was her mother's (my grandmother).

She told us that her mother had often spoke of about seeing and being followed by a man in a top hat and cloak. My grandmother was not from the village were I lived, she was from a town some 9 miles away. It's a decent sized town I guess and it has plenty of its own stories too I'm sure. Her house was in a little cul-de-sac that was at the back of an old supermarket. There was a shortcut to her house, a small narrow alley that stretched the length of the store all the way past her house. There were no lights on the actual alley itself and the walls on either side were pretty high, for the most part. So when it was night and dark, it was really damn dark on that alley. The only light you could see was the light back down at the end that shun from the road where the store was.

My grandmother was playing bingo one night, and sure enough like any other night, she walked up that alley to get home quicker. Halfway up it she heard footsteps behind her. She stopped and did something she always advised her kids against doing, she turned around to see what was there. There was nothing there, the long narrow laneway was empty. She began to walk again and once again she heard something behind her. She turned, this time, the hat man walked out of the shadows and stood tall and menacing, a dark silhouette that almost blocked all the light at the end of the alley. She told my mother that she asked him 'what he wanted' and something else. He didn't answer though and she just turned back and walked home. I'm not sure if she ever saw him again. She was old school though, hard as nails, but on the inside she was a cushion.

The next time I heard something about him, I was around 20. I was having a few pints with a few mates, there was a lock in, which there normally was (and is) in the pubs in my village. When we sat down at a table where some old stories were being told. A guy got talking. Now this man is as straight as they get, no bullsh*t kind of guy. A country chap who worked his ass off during the week and enjoyed a pint on the weekends. He said he was walking home one night, it was black dark. Man, once you walk out of Ferns (my village), well back then at least, there were no lights till the next town or village. So, he's walking home when just like my grandmother he heard someone walking behind him. He stopped and looked back, and this happened several times, to the point where it sounded like the footsteps were right behind him. He stopped and looked back, nothing there, he turned back to face the way he was going, when there standing in front of him was a tall man with a top hat. He said the man was jet black, so black that he was even more dark and black that the black night that surrounded him. He was frozen, terrified, the Hat-Man walked past him and said nothing, disappearing into the night. The guy who told us this was visibly shaken by what happened and had nothing to gain by making something like that up. We even walked him home that night. I heard two other stories about him, but they are different, he is far more aggressive in them and I'm not so sure whether or not I can believe the sources.

All the best, peace. Shay Davitt

The Rebellion of The Jinn
According to Islamic teaching, the Jinn are a form of non corporeal sentience created 2,000 years before Adam that can be either good or evil and can assume the form of animals, insects or humans. Solomon was considered to be the only one who could control them with his ring, which is also known as Solomon's Seal which in alchemy, the symbol is representative of the combination of opposites as a singularity of process known as transmutation.

In nuclear transmutation,it is the conversion of one chemical element or isotope into another through nuclear reaction. In physics, it is dimensional transmutation, a physical mechanism that transforms a pure number into a parameter with a dimension. In biology it refers to the transmutation of species, the alteration of one species into another and\or a form of nuclear transmutation said by some scientists to occur within living organisms. One could say in relation to the transmutation of matter into energy, we have let loose the Jinn from within a lamp, only to find they cannot be restrained to be placed back within it. This transmutation of the elements in modern alchemy is the outer representation of what Jung referred to as the process of individuation in psychology wherein the various elements of the psyche become unified as a singularity. Certainly we can consider the recombinant arrangement of thought as a living system, within reciprocal systems, as Alan Watts suggested the nature of reality may be a wide spectrum of recombinant interrelationships between an equally large number of parallel operating systems. We can easily demonstrate this principle to the empirical and yet we have a paradox in assigning this to the intangible.

Jung suggested that in psychological terms, the UFO phenomenon itself "may be a spontaneous reaction of the subconscious to fear of the apparently insoluble political situation in the world that may lead at any moment to catastrophe. At such times eyes turn heavenwards in search of help, and miraculous forebodings of a threatening or consoling nature appear from on high."

When we return to Alchemy, most do not understand it's foundation in Platonic thought, which Jung recognized ,which in of itself, is a living system of cognition. In other words, thought itself is a process of transmutation.

Then we have yet another example of transmutation found in the theory of the Noosphere, originally envisioned by a Mr Vernadsky, the Noosphere is the third in a succession of phases of development of the Earth, after the Geosphere (inanimate matter) and the biosphere (biological life). Just as the emergence of life fundamentally transformed the Geosphere, the emergence of human cognition fundamentally transforms the Biosphere. In contrast to the conceptions of the Gaia theorists, or the promoters of cyberspace, Vernadsky's Noosphere emerges at the point where humankind, through the mastery of nuclear processes, begins to create resources through the transmutation of elements, which then leads into the nature of the source of this transmutation, the human mind and the potential connection to an aspect of it's nature, which the Jinn may represent.

Arising from the adaptation of the non local, not to be found in any particular cartography we can assign to geography or biology, which is superimposed onto a self referential language as a measuring device in order to navigate the scrim of forms, we arrived to be triangulated by a self organizing production of personas, terms, abstractions, metaphors and analogies that tie behavior as a mobile form of organized energy known as information, which can be seen as a creative act only by it's effects, whether it is working for a living, a conversation via a cell phone or more deeply, in the critical assumptions we identify with, that, in a parasitic manner, limit our range of movement, or if you will, our behavior.

In previous posts, I have examined the concept that as a semi-autonomous creature, we may share this environment with a revision of our ancient concept of animism, that it may not be a simple matter of this versus that, but that all cellular or Holonic components of such a living system are inter-dependent, whether they be planets or a blade of grass, all of which require intermediary processes to store, transform and irradiate what their form produces and requires in a thermodynamics of information posed as energy and vice-versa.

However, this living system is in the throes, as most of us recognize this fact, of a re-balancing, or offset to avoid entropy which can historically cause mutational variants of existing forms to appear. In this we have the transference of energy in biophotons or perhaps in the strange case of Ted Serios, wherein the manifestation of coherent images that arise from the nexus of the immaterial to the tangible, suggest properties of which we have no conscious impression, much like the fact that our blood flows through veins without the purposeful interaction of will arising from thought. But perhaps this can be inverted wherein, the ghost within the machine of biology can appear to us as an intermediary form. Any creative act is perhaps a transmutation of thought to the material but we find great discomfort in the potential realization that this process may occur in a unconscious or autonomic process that we cannot control, although even that most empirical of the dark arts in the militarization of the psyche as evidenced in Stargate, has explored this possibility of it's conscious control through the visualization of remote objects.
Again a transmutational process is at play.

In this, we construct a self organizing locational beacon within us in the form of a database, that as an intermediary between materiality and intangibles becomes transposed onto the world as a projection that often, as a result, considers proof and truth to be one in the same rather than simply referents in space time.

Imagine that these individuated measurements, as that is all they are, were a form of energy in of themselves, where the architecture of information that create a locus of attenuation had, from a certain perspective, possess a life or coherence of their own. In other words, thoughts as organized by ourselves as packets of information, self reflective, capable of decision, were in fact intermediate entities in of themselves.

They marry, have children, have certain aims, desires, and all within a social network. Well, in a sense, our inner world is so constituted as an image of a reflection and it is also such to the Jinn, in a reversal of orientation, whereas we are materially located on a contingent basis, they are if you will, non local. We both share the same environment in abodes that are, in effect, parallel worlds alongside one another.

In Islamic thought, the creation of the Jinn superseded that of humanity in it's material form that, when compared to other Islamic schools, this origin narrative, suggests that the prototype of Adam was first created as a non material entity, that was subsequently deceived by a "tree of knowledge" or if you will, the aforementioned, self organizing realm of referents to become encased in a cellular deception and cast into a set of behaviors, that are far from a paradise, wherein he is in some sense, his or her worst enemy. William S Burroughs concept of language as a viral process of deception mistaken for sentience comes to mind as another apt metaphor, wherein intelligence is all that is required to produce unwitting effects upon itself.

One considers, as a correspondence, that the Theosophist conceptual basis of a mirror image relegated to an existence corresponding to that of the illusion of autonomy of movement such as in the static data of a DVD appearing to posses autonomy, is that the strength and clarity (coherence) of the originating source determines the duration, signal strength and the distance of travel of its developed mirror image as a thought-form. It is said, in this light, that thought-forms can have the capability to assume their own locus of energy exchange and appear to be intelligent and independent. Equally strong thought-forms can disperse them, or they may disintegrate when their purpose has been accomplished. Some may stay in existence for years, while others can become uncontrollable and turn on their senders.

Then there is the inverse found in the Tibetan Book of The Dead wherein contemporary interpretations of the source material suggest that the variety of visions experienced as sentient Deities by the dead,as the Dali Lama suggests, that" They are actually symbolic manifestations of psychological states in the inner space of human awareness." Perhaps "as above, so below" axiom can be extended to include "as within, so without".

As a branch of a superimposed tree, the Jinn have no such cellular restrictions as ourselves, inasmuch as they are the non material, reversed equivalents of ourselves, capable of what is termed the shifting of form, organizing form as we organize thought, one being superimposed upon the other. A metaphor of their composition in texts relates this characteristic to the equivalent of smoke, which essentially is a temporal visible manifestation of an energy exchange, where the material environment can be utilized to create effects that in of themselves have no autonomous reality as it were.

What is interesting concerning the parallel universe of the Jinn is that one studies and researches their behavioral characteristics, they are carbon copies of ourselves transposed onto an ontology that infers that the Jinn in of themselves may be the equivalent of Poe's William Wilson, an energetic doppleganger that once loosed from the triangulation of cellular orientation, may have, if you will, developed a life of it's own.

Recent speculation is such that the Internet has such a potential but what I am suggesting to you is that living systems have a basis of being interdependent and semi autonomous when viewed as discrete stations of energy transference whether it is an ant or a elephant or a human being, all have the equivalent of a ghost within them, that essentially is an operating system of energy that whether it is the biochemical energy of genetics, or an EKG reading are all indicative of coherent energy.

Correspondingly, the Jinn may be in effect our own reflection in a mirror universe that parallels our own basis of orientation. The ships that seemingly roam through the night sky, the strange creatures outside of our own capability to capture them or find in a geographic sense, that defy the attachment of a GPS, may be evidence that proof and truth as we apply them currently to a living system, may be irrelevant unless we reorient ourselves the the reversal of forces that constitute a dream from the material to the ephemeral...to the ephemeral to the material as two sides of the same coin.

- STRANGE TALES OF THE GOATMAN DEPARTMENT -

Mystery Still Engulfs Lake Worth, Texas Monster

Greer Island, a small patch of land close to where the West Fork of the Trinity River flows into Lake Worth, is heavily shaded by tall oaks, cedar elms and cottonwoods.

One of the quietest spots in Fort Worth, the island is home to egrets and owls, perhaps an alligator or two.

And maybe, just maybe, the Lake Worth Monster.

The Lake Worth Monster, aka Goat-Man, hasn't been seen regularly at the Fort Worth Nature Center since a very memorable summer 40 years ago when all of Texas seemed to buzz with the news that a hairy, scaly 7-foot man-goat-beast was terrorizing the good citizens of Tarrant County.

"Every so often, it will come up in conversation," said Suzanne Tuttle, manager of the Nature Center. "Somebody will say, 'I remember when that happened."'

Perhaps the monster moved on to less-populated environs, and maybe it's dead by now, his bones to be discovered decades later by a lucky anthropologist.

Or, as more people actually suspect, the monster was really several creatures, all hoaxes carried out by enterprising and opportunistic mischief-makers from Brewer, Castleberry or North Side high school.

No one is exactly sure.

Mystery still cloaks the legend of the Lake Worth Monster and his tire-chucking, hair-raising appearance in July 1969.

On the afternoon of July 10 that year, the Star-Telegram's front page carried a headline above the fold "Fishy Man-Goat Terrifies Couples Parked at Lake Worth."

Reporter Jim Marrs broke the story to the world.

"Six terrified residents told police early today they were attacked by a thing they described as being half-man, half-goat and covered with fur and scales.

"Four units of Fort Worth police and the residents searched in vain for the thing, which was reported seen at Lake Worth, near Greer Island."

John Reichart told police that the creature leapt from a tree and landed on his car, and he showed them an 18-inch scar down the side of his car as proof.

The police officer told Marrs that "we did make a serious investigation because those people were really scared."

The police also revealed that they had received reports in the past but had laughed them off.

The next night, the monster, in front of a couple of dozen witnesses, was said to have uttered a "pitiful cry" and hurled a tire from a bluff at them.

The police weren't laughing anymore. Hundreds of amateur trackers descended on the area with all manner of Remingtons, Brownings and Colts.

"I'm not worried about the monster so much as all those people wandering around out there with guns," a police sergeant was quoted as saying in Marrs' second-day story.

One of the curious who went to Lake Worth that summer was Sallie Ann Clarke, an aspiring writer and private investigator who dropped everything to interview people for what would become her quick-draw and slightly tongue-in-cheek book, "The Lake Worth Monster of Greer Island," self-published in September '69.

During the weeks of summer, people saw the creature running through the Johnson grass, found tracks too big for a man, and reported dead sheep and blood.

Soldiers and sailors in Vietnam wrote their parents in Fort Worth and asked for more news, and reporters from far and wide wrote stories about it. The authorities continued to blame either a bobcat or teenage pranksters.

Then, about the time school resumed, perhaps not coincidentally, the Lake Worth Monster furor largely disappeared.

Clarke is 80 years old now and still lives in Benbrook, but, regrettably, she can't talk much about that summer.

A series of strokes greatly damaged her memory and her health, said her husband, Richard Lederer.

Clarke has always regretted the way she wrote her book, he said, because after she published it, she saw the monster on three occasions.

"If I'd seen it before I wrote the book, the book would have been quite a lot different," she told the Star-Telegram in 1989. "It wouldn't have been semi-fiction. It would have been like a history." She has the most famous, perhaps the only, photograph ever taken. It was given to her by Allen Plaster, who snapped it in October 1969 at 1:15 a.m. near Greer Island.

Both her descriptions and the photo show a large white something, though it doesn't seem to favor a goat at all.

Plaster, interviewed in 2006, said he doesn't buy the monster story now.

"Looking back, I realize that when we drove by, it stood up," he was quoted as saying in the Star-Telegram. "Whatever it was, it wanted to be seen. That was a prank. That was somebody out there waiting for people to drive by. I don't think an animal would have acted that way."

For his part, though, Plaster isn't talking anymore. He declined an interview request.

In 2005, a reporter at the Star-Telegram received a handwritten letter, with no name and no forwarding address.

"One weekend, myself and two friends from North Side High School decided to go out to Lake Worth and scare people on the roads where there were always stories of monsters and creatures who would attack parkers," the letter began.

The writer claimed to have used tinfoil to make a homemade mask to scare a truckload of girls.

When the friends were finished, they went to a Dairy Queen on the north side.

"I had a Coke float. The goatman had a parfait," the letter said. "The goatman turns 55 this summer and resides a peaceful life in the hills outside of Joshua."

Except that whoever wrote the letter a man who lives somewhere near Beaumont, based on the postal cancellation isn't the only person to make such a claim.

Marrs, the reporter, told the newspaper in 1989 that police questioned several Castleberry students who were found with a faceless gorilla outfit and a mask.

Fort Worth, Texas magazine outed a man this month identified only as "Vinzens" who admitted being involved in the infamous tire-throwing incident of July 11.

He said the tire went airborne only because it hit a bump after they rolled it. But he had no interest in naming more names or publicly taking credit or blame.

The owner of a kennel near Lake Worth has also said that he lost a macaque monkey that summer and that perhaps the primate was responsible.

All of it could be true. Or none of it.

Who knows?

Clarke's husband maintains that the monster was definitely not pranksters.

"She offered a $5,000 reward for any person who could pass a polygraph that they were the monster," Lederer said. "She never got a call."

The Nature Center is holding its own monster revival celebration Oct. 3, a date selected for the temperate Texas autumn rather than any connection to the events of 1969. It will have canoe rides, guided hikes around Greer Island, live music, food and drinks.

For those who belong to the Friends of the Nature Center, Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy Chairman Craig Woolheater will speak at a private dinner that night.

Tuttle said the Nature Center's staff is skeptical of the existence of a monster.

But ...

"You never know," she said. "He may hear about it and just turn up."

Nigerian President Says He is Not A Clone
By Dulue Mbachu

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has an unusual new campaign pitch: he isn’t dead.

In a Facebook post on Sunday following a meeting with Nigerians in Poland, Buhari said he’d been asked whether it really was him speaking to the group or a clone, given speculation he’d died last year when he was absent from the country on medical leave.

“I can assure you all that this is the real me,” he said. “I’m still going strong!”

Buhari, who turns 76 this month, has been dogged by questions about his health since spending more than five months in the U.K. being treated for an undisclosed illness last year. He faces re-election in February amid growing divisions within his own party and a challenge from Atiku Abubakar, a 72-year-old businessman and former vice president who’s promising an economic revival for Africa’s biggest oil producer.

Conspiracy Theory

A separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, has taken advantage of Buhari’s health issues to peddle a conspiracy theory that he died in London and was replaced by a look-alike from Sudan named Jubril. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the group campaigning for an independent Biafra in the country’s southeast, was arrested and charged with treason by Buhari’s government in 2016.

But while free on bail, Kanu’s residence was raided by the military in an operation that left several people dead. Kanu escaped the country and reappeared in Israel in October, according to his lawyer. He’s since been broadcasting his claims about Buhari’s alleged double via Facebook, helping to feed a social media frenzy back home.

“When I was away on medical vacation last year, a lot of people hoped I was dead," Buhari said in his Facebook video on Sunday. He said his vice president had been contacted at the time by people assuming he was moving into the president’s job and offering their services as deputy.

Buhari’s challenger for the presidency, Abubakar, has sought to take advantage of the incumbent’s seeming aloofness. He’s challenged Buhari to a televised debate and beat him in responding to attacks by Islamist insurgents, offering scholarships to the children of killed soldiers before the government extended official condolences.

Tight Race

Analysts have mixed views on which way the Nigerian electorate will lean. If a free and fair election were held now, New York-based risk adviser Teneo projects that the challenger Abubakar would win 57 percent of the vote to Buhari’s 42 percent, with about 1 percent going to other candidates. But the situation could change to the favor of either candidate, Teneo Vice President Malte Liewerscheidt said in an emailed note to clients.

Eurasia Group, on the contrary, sees a Buhari victory with 55 percent of the vote against Abubakar’s 45 percent, citing the incumbent’s relative trustworthiness when compared to Abubakar.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation, with almost 200 million inhabitants, and vying with South Africa to be the continent’s largest economy. Buhari has made himself more visible in the run-up to February’s election, with recent appearances in Maiduguri, where the government has been fighting Boko Haram Islamist militants, as well as in Poland and Paris.
