Zappa is my favorite guitarist. He doesn't sound like anyone. His guitar is immediately recognizable making Zappa original. Being original in these times is next to impossible and frequently either regarded callously or shunned completely. This is why I value Zappa, especially his guitar playing, particularly the solos. A boxset of Zappa solos in audiophile quality.....well.....holy f*cking sh*t. 1981 started to look up when this was made. N

Zappa's mountain of recordings range from unlistenable to untouchable - this one definitely falls on the latter end. There is something about the backing instrumentation on these solos that give them incredible depth. Gets me right in the feels you know? FZ absolutely shreds with original style, demonstrating what true mastery looks like on a guitar. I really can't see how a musician or audiophile can listen to this album and not put FZ in the same league as hendrix, page and the other typical top names you see on those stupid lists of guitar legends.

After listening to this you can never claim that Zappa doesn't have chops - his skill is quite evident here, if not his range. However, do not expect this box set to contain fully composed selections with beginnings, middles, ends, first and second themes, tensions built and released, and hooks. Lacks all of that. It's more avant garde jam band in nature. It is what it is, and fans of guitar improvisations and exploration will find it enjoyable.

just in case this is not already universally known but the recording
quality and sound quality of this set rivals any i've ever heard.
of course the music is amazing as others have reviewed but Zappa
records are always incredibly well recorded, mastered and pressed.
i don't think enough credit is given to his relentless pursuit of quality.
especially since most of his records contain some live and studio
recordings seamlessly woven together to make new material,
i'm not sure but i don't know too many others who have taken that
very difficult approach to recording.

Amazing guitarist. Would like to have heard more of this unique talent on other albums.

Probably the single greatest collection of electric guitar solos in the entire Universe. Truly staggering.
